It can be very difficult to keep your floors clean when it is wintertime. There is nothing worse than having kids running across your carpet and floor with wet snow boots. There are however several ways to protect your floor or carpet.

What you will need to do is create a space just for the winter boots and shoes. This space should be placed at the front door. I have found that placing a boot storage area right next to the front door is a good idea. You can create your own boot storage box from pieces of wood. Start by visiting your local Home Depot store. There you will be able to find some easy box building kits or pieces of scrap wood. You can use these scrap pieces of wood to build a simple wooden box. I would recommend that you make a rectangular shaped box. Be sure that the box is wide and long enough to hold all of the boots of all of the family members. You can pick your own dimensions for the box depending on your own circumstances.

I have found it to be a good idea to use a plastic bag inside of the box. Spread out the plastic bag the same way you would a garbage bag over a garbage can. This way when the boots are wet from the snow the water will get into the bag. If there is any dirt on the boots then it will be on the bag. When the bag is dirty you can change it and put in a clean bag.

It may also be a good idea to put some inexpensive slippers or socks in a small kids bucket next to the front door. This way whenever someone comes home they can put some socks or slippers on in order to keep their feet warm when walking around the house. For kids I have also found it to be a good idea to put up a little sign by the door that says leave boots and dirty shoes in box. Put an arrow under the message. Kids love seeing little bright colored signs and it will help them to remember when they come in the door.

By taking the time to make sure that there is a place for the dirty boots and shoes you will be keeping your home cleaner, and mess free.
